How Do I Get My Business Recommended by ChatGPT?
If someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a business like yours, does your name come up?
For most business owners, the honest answer is: not sure, and a bit worried to check. That uncertainty is exactly why GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) matters now. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot are quietly becoming the first place people go when they need a recommendation, and unlike a search results page, these tools don't show ten options. They name one or two, and move on.
Here's what actually decides whether that name is yours.
ChatGPT doesn't guess. It reads.
When ChatGPT recommends a business, it isn't pulling from a gut feeling or a hidden ranking system tied to ad spend. It's pulling from real content it has read, either during training or through a live web search it runs as part of answering your question.
That means three things carry real weight:
What your website says about your business, and how clearly it says it
What directories, review platforms and industry bodies say about you
Whether your name, location and services show up together, consistently, across the web
If none of that exists, or it's thin, outdated, or contradictory, ChatGPT has nothing solid to recommend you with. It moves on to a competitor who gave it something to work with.
The five things that actually move the needle
1. A website that states the obvious, clearly
This sounds too simple to matter, but it's the most common gap. Your homepage needs to say plainly what you do, who you do it for, and where you're based. Not buried in a hero image. Written in text, in sentences, the way you'd explain it to a person.
2. Directory listings that agree with each other
Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and the review platforms relevant to your industry, VouchedFor for financial advisers, ReviewSolicitors for law firms, whatever fits your sector, all need to show the same name, address and phone number. AI tools cross-reference this. Inconsistency reads as unreliable.
3. Content that answers real questions
A blog post titled "Retirement Planning in Teddington" does more for your visibility than a generic "About Us" page ever will, because it matches the actual language someone types into ChatGPT. Write for the question, not for your own internal jargon.
4. Reviews, and enough of them
AI tools weigh review volume and recency more than most business owners expect. A handful of five-star reviews from three years ago says less than a steady trickle of recent ones. If you haven't asked a client for a review this month, that's worth fixing before anything else on this list.
5. Being named alongside your credentials
If you're regulated, certified, or a member of a professional body, that needs to appear near your business name, not just on a certificate on the wall. AI tools use credentials as a trust signal when deciding who to recommend for anything remotely serious, financial advice, legal services, healthcare.
What this looks like in practice
We ran this exact audit for a financial adviser in Teddington earlier this year. Before any changes, he appeared on just 1 of 4 AI platforms tested, and even then, only partially. ChatGPT was naming his competitors instead, businesses with stronger directory presence and more visible reviews, despite him having 31 years of local experience.
The fix wasn't complicated. It was directory consistency, a stronger Google Business Profile, and content that matched what people were actually asking. Within weeks, he was appearing across multiple platforms for the exact searches that matter to his business.
Where to start
If you want to know where you currently stand, a GEO Visibility Audit shows you exactly which platforms recommend you, which recommend your competitors instead, and what's missing. It's the same process we use with every client before any work begins.
