GEO for Local Businesses: What Actually Works | LP Consulting
Most GEO advice is written for enterprise software brands. Here is why it does not work for local businesses, and what drives AI search visibility instead.

Why Enterprise GEO Advice Fails Local Businesses
Almost every guide to Generative Engine Optimisation is written for enterprise software companies. It tells you to build Reddit threads, publish YouTube explainers and improve your G2 listing. If you run a dental practice, a financial advice firm or a clinic, that advice will waste your money. Local AI visibility is won on completely different surfaces.
Why this matters
Buyers now start with a question, not a search. Someone looking for a private dentist in Surrey or an independent financial adviser in Oxfordshire increasingly asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity or Copilot before they ever open a browser tab. The AI gives them two or three names. Those names become the shortlist.
Research from 6sense found that 95% of buyers purchase from the shortlist they had on day one. If you are not in the answer, you are not in the running. No amount of advertising later in the process fixes that.
The problem is that the people writing the GEO playbooks are not writing for you.
Where the standard advice comes from
The GEO research that agencies quote comes from a small number of studies, and almost all of it analyses business software categories. Project management tools. CRMs. Marketing platforms.
Those studies produced some useful headline findings. AirOps research found that 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from third party sources rather than the brand's own website. Analysis by Athena across millions of AI responses found Reddit accounts for roughly 22.9% of top cited domains, with YouTube next at 13.4%.
Both findings are accurate. Neither is about you.
When someone asks an AI which CRM suits a fifty person sales team, the model reads Reddit debates and review site comparisons, because that is where the discussion lives. When someone asks which dental clinic near them offers Invisalign, the model reads something else.
Four ways enterprise GEO advice breaks for local businesses
1. The citation sources are different
For a national software brand, the trusted sources are Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, G2 and Capterra.
For a local service business, they are:
Google Business Profile, including reviews, questions and posted content
Review platforms that matter in your sector, such as VouchedFor for advisers or Doctify for clinics
Professional registers and directories, such as the GDC register, the FCA register, Unbiased or Checkatrade
Local and regional press
Local roundup pages, the "best clinics in X" and "top ten advisers in Y" articles that already rank in your town
An agency that runs a Reddit campaign for a Weybridge dental practice is spending your retainer on the wrong platform.
2. The queries are different
Enterprise GEO chases broad category questions. Best tool for X. Alternatives to Y.
Local queries carry geography and constraint. Best orthodontist near Guildford that takes adults. Independent financial adviser in Oxford for pension transfers. Emergency dentist open Saturday in Reading.
These questions are narrower, which changes the whole shape of the work. You do not need to compete nationally. You need to be one of the few businesses the model associates with a service in a specific place.
3. The benchmarks are different
Agencies love to quote Share of Model figures. Category leaders reach 40% to 60% of relevant AI answers. Average brands sit near 17%.
Those numbers come from national software categories with hundreds of competitors. In a local market you might have twelve real competitors. The realistic target is not a percentage of a national conversation. It is whether you appear in the two or three names an AI gives someone in your town.
That is a much easier target to hit. It is also easier to measure. You can test it yourself in an afternoon.
4. The timescale and budget assumptions are different
Published agency pricing for GEO starts around £1,000 per month and runs to £5,000 and beyond. That is built for marketing departments with headcount, not for an owner operator with a practice to run.
The work itself is smaller too. A national brand needs content produced at scale across dozens of platforms. A local business usually needs a handful of specific things fixed properly, then maintained.
What actually drives local AI visibility
Four things, in order of impact.
Consistent and complete business information everywhere it appears. AI models cross reference your details across the web. Mismatched addresses, old phone numbers and inconsistent business names create doubt. Doubt means the model picks a competitor it is more confident about.
Reviews with substance. A five star rating with no text tells a model nothing. Reviews that mention specific services, specific locations and specific outcomes give the model language to work with. This is the single most under used lever in local GEO.
Inclusion in local roundups and directories. If a page titled "best private GPs in Berkshire" exists and you are not on it, that is a fixable gap. Getting added, or moving from fifth to second on the list, is often faster and cheaper than producing new content.
Content structured for extraction. Clear headings. Direct answers to real questions. Service pages that state plainly what you do, where you do it and who it is for. FAQ markup so models can map questions to your answers. AirOps research found that pages with clean, sequential heading structures were cited 2.8 times more often than pages with fragmented structure.
Notice what is missing from that list. No Reddit strategy. No YouTube channel. No enterprise content programme.
How to check your own visibility in ten minutes
Do this now. Open ChatGPT in a private browsing window so your history does not skew the result.
Ask it three questions:
Best [your service] in [your town]
Who are the top [your profession] near [your town]
I need [specific service you offer] in [your area], who should I contact
Write down every business named. Note the order. Note whether anything said about you is accurate.
Then repeat the same three questions in Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. The answers will differ, sometimes considerably.
If you do not appear, you now know exactly what the problem is. If you do appear but a competitor is listed first, you know what the job is.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
If you are speaking to a GEO agency, ask these:
What are the main citation sources for AI answers in my sector and my area?
How will you improve my Google Business Profile and review content specifically?
Which local roundup pages and directories am I missing from?
How will you show me my visibility before we start and every month after?
What happens to my visibility if we stop?
Vague answers, or an answer that centres on your website alone, tells you they are applying an enterprise playbook to a local business.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as SEO? No, but they overlap. SEO works to rank your website in a list of results. GEO works to get your business named and cited inside AI generated answers. Good SEO helps, but most AI citations come from sources other than your own website.
Is it too early to worry about AI search? No. The advantage goes to whoever establishes visibility first, because citations build authority and authority attracts further citations. It is far harder to displace an established business from an AI answer than to become one.
Do I need to be on Reddit? Almost certainly not, if you are a local service business. That advice comes from research into software brands.
How long does it take? Expect meaningful movement in around twelve weeks. Visibility in AI answers is also volatile by nature. AirOps found only about 30% of brands stayed visible between consecutive answers, which is why this needs maintaining rather than fixing once.
Can I do this myself? Parts of it, yes. The visibility test above costs nothing. Fixing your business information and improving review content are both within reach for most owners. The directory and roundup work is where most people run out of time.
If you want to know exactly where you stand, I run a GEO Visibility Snapshot for local businesses. It tests your business across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, shows you which competitors are appearing instead of you, and sets out what to fix first.
