GEO for Dentists: What AI Search Can Do for Your Practice | LP Consulting
How Generative Engine Optimisation gets your dental practice named when patients ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity for a dentist. What it does, what to expect, and how to check where you stand.

What Can GEO Do for My Dental Practice?
GEO gets your dental practice named and recommended when a patient asks an AI tool for a dentist. When someone types "best dentist near me for implants" into ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews or Perplexity, the AI hands back two or three practices. GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, is the work that decides whether yours is one of them.
For a dental practice, that is worth real money. A single implant or Invisalign patient can be worth thousands over their time with you. Being the practice the AI names is now one of the most valuable positions you can hold in your local market.
How patients find a dentist has changed
For years, a patient looking for a dentist typed "dentist near me" into Google and scrolled through a map and a list. Many still do. But a growing number now ask an AI first.
They open ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview and ask a real question. Not a keyword, a question. "I need an emergency dentist in Reading open on a Saturday." "Who does the best veneers near Guildford?" "Is there a good dentist for nervous patients in Oxford?"
The AI reads across the web and answers with a short, confident recommendation. A few names. The patient rarely looks much further. If your practice is not in that answer, you are not in the running, and the patient never even knows you exist.
That is the shift. The choice is now made inside the answer, before the patient visits a single website.
What GEO actually does for your practice
Put plainly, GEO does four things.
It gets your practice named in AI answers for the treatments you want to be known for, whether that is implants, Invisalign, veneers, whitening or routine NHS and private care.
It makes sure that what the AI says about you is accurate. Wrong opening hours, an old phone number or a treatment you no longer offer all cost you patients.
It improves where you sit in the answer. Being the first practice named carries far more weight than being the third.
And it protects that position over time, because AI visibility is not something you win once and keep.
The questions that matter for dentists
Patients ask AI tools three broad types of question, and each is an opportunity.
Near me and local. "Best dentist in [town]." "Private dentist near [area]." These are the bread and butter queries, and they reward practices with strong, consistent local signals.
Treatment specific. "Where can I get Invisalign in [town]." "Best clinic for dental implants near [area]." These carry high intent and high value. A patient asking this is close to booking, and often for expensive work.
Urgent. "Emergency dentist open now in [town]." "Dentist for toothache near me today." Whoever the AI names here often wins the patient within the hour.
The practices that show up across all three are the ones that treat GEO seriously.
Where AI learns about your practice
Here is the part most practice owners get wrong. They assume the AI reads their website and forms its view from that. It does not, mostly.
Research from AirOps found that around 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from sources other than the business's own website. For a dental practice, that means the AI is forming its opinion of you from:
Your Google Business Profile, including your reviews, your photos and the questions patients ask
Review platforms and health directories such as Doctify, WhatClinic and the NHS Find a Dentist service
Your entry on the General Dental Council register
Local "best dentist in [town]" roundup articles and blog posts
Local press and community mentions
Your website matters, but it is one voice among many. The practices that win in AI search are the ones with a strong, consistent and positive presence across all of these, not just a nice homepage.
Reviews deserve special mention. A five star rating with no words tells an AI very little. Reviews that name a treatment, a location and a result give the model real language to work with. "Had my implants done here and the whole team was brilliant" is worth more to your AI visibility than a bare star rating, because the AI can quote and use it.
What to expect, realistically
Two things are true about AI search, and any honest consultant will tell you both.
First, it compounds. Once an AI starts naming your practice, that visibility builds on itself. Being cited makes you look authoritative, which makes you more likely to be cited again. Early movers in a local dental market are hard to shift once established.
Second, it is volatile. AirOps found that only about 30% of businesses stayed visible between two consecutive AI answers to the same question. The models rebuild every answer from scratch. This is exactly why GEO is ongoing work, not a one off fix. You maintain the position, or you lose it to the practice down the road that is still putting the work in.
Expect meaningful movement in around twelve weeks, then steady gains from there if the work continues.
How to check where your practice stands
You can do a rough test yourself in ten minutes. Open ChatGPT in a private browsing window so your own history does not affect the result. Then ask it, as a patient would:
Best dentist in [your town]
Where can I get [your top treatment] near [your town]
Recommend a dentist in [your area] for [nervous patients, or children, or whatever you specialise in]
Write down which practices it names, in what order, and whether anything it says about you is wrong. Then try the same questions in Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. The answers will not match.
If your practice is missing, you have found the problem. If a competitor is named ahead of you, you have found the job.
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO for a dental practice? GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, is the work of getting your practice named and recommended inside the answers AI tools give patients, so that someone asking ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews for a dentist is shown your practice.
Is GEO the same as SEO for dentists? No, but they work together. SEO helps your website rank in Google's results. GEO gets your practice into AI generated answers, most of which draw on sources beyond your own website, such as reviews, directories and the GDC register.
Which treatments benefit most? High value private treatments like implants, Invisalign and veneers tend to benefit most, because the patient does more research and the value of each patient is high. But GEO helps across the board, including routine and emergency care.
How important are reviews? Very. Reviews are one of the strongest signals AI uses to judge a practice, and reviews that mention specific treatments and results are far more useful than star ratings alone.
How long does it take? Expect noticeable movement in around twelve weeks. Because AI visibility is volatile, it needs maintaining rather than fixing once.
Can I do this myself? Some of it. The visibility test above is free, and improving your Google Business Profile and encouraging detailed reviews are within reach for any practice. The wider directory and local listing work is usually where practice owners run out of time.
If you want to know exactly how your practice appears when patients ask AI for a dentist, I run a GEO Visibility Snapshot for dental practices. It tests your practice across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, shows which practices are being recommended instead of you, and sets out what to fix first.
