GEO and AEO for Businesses: A Practical Guide | LP Consulting

A plain English guide to GEO and AEO for business owners. What they are, why AI search visibility matters now, and the practical steps to get your business into AI answers.

GEO for Businesses: How to Show Up in AI Search (and Where AEO Fits In)

Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, is the work of getting your business named and cited inside the answers that AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot give people. When a potential customer asks an AI for a recommendation, GEO is what decides whether your business is in the answer or left out of it.

If you have also seen the term AEO, you are not confused. The two overlap heavily. This guide explains both, why they matter to any business right now, and what to actually do about it.

What is GEO?

GEO is about presence inside AI generated answers. Not ranking a page in a list of blue links, but being one of the businesses an AI mentions, cites and describes when someone asks a question in your category.

That is a different job from traditional SEO. A search engine returns ten links and lets the user choose. An AI reads dozens of sources, decides which businesses are relevant and trustworthy, and hands the user a short answer with a few names in it. GEO is the practice of becoming one of those names.

What is AEO, and is it the same thing?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is the work of making your content the direct answer to a specific question.

AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, the "position zero" box at the top of Google and the spoken answer from a smart speaker. It focuses on clear, structured, quotable answers to precise questions.

GEO is broader. It covers being present and cited across whole AI generated responses, including your reputation, your mentions on other sites and how AI describes you.

In practice most people use the terms loosely, and you will see GEO, AEO and AIO (AI Optimisation) treated as the same thing. The industry has not settled on one word. The honest summary is this: AEO leans towards being the answer to a question, GEO leans towards being present and trusted across AI answers generally. The work needed to win at both is almost identical, so you do not need to choose between them.

Why this matters for your business now

The way people find businesses is changing fast.

Research from G2 found that 30% of buyers now start with AI before Google, and 47% use it for market research. Your customers are asking an AI to narrow the field before they visit a single website.

That first answer matters more than it looks. Data from 6sense found that 95% of buyers end up purchasing from the shortlist they already had on day one. If the AI does not name you, you are not on that shortlist, and no advertising later in the process puts you back on it.

The businesses that appear early build a lead that is hard to overturn. Citations build authority, and authority attracts more citations. The first movers in each category are becoming difficult to displace.

There is a quality angle too. Ahrefs found that ChatGPT drove only 0.5% of their website traffic but 12.1% of their new signups, a conversion rate many times higher than the average source. By the time someone arrives from an AI tool, the AI has already framed the choice and pre qualified them. They are not browsing. They are close to deciding.

Lower traffic, higher intent. That is the trade AI search is offering, and it rewards the businesses that show up in the answer.

How AI decides which businesses to name

Understanding the machinery helps you see why the work is what it is.

When someone asks an AI a question, the model does not just answer that one question. It expands it into roughly twenty related questions behind the scenes, a process often called query fanout. A prompt like "best accountant for a small business" becomes dozens of variations covering different services, situations and locations.

For each of those, the AI pulls in sources, typically between five and sixteen per answer, and weighs them for relevance, authority and freshness. Then it builds the answer from scratch.

Two things follow from this.

First, you cannot win by optimising for a single keyword. The AI is testing your business against a wide spread of questions.

Second, most of what the AI reads is not your website. AirOps research found that 85% of brand mentions in AI answers come from third party sources rather than the brand's own site. Reviews, directories, listicles, press and community discussion carry more weight than your own pages. This is the single biggest difference between GEO and old fashioned SEO, and the part most businesses miss.

GEO does not replace SEO. It builds on it. A sound website is still the foundation. GEO adds a layer on top that reaches into every source an AI uses to form an opinion of your business.

What businesses should actually do

Four areas, in rough order of impact for most businesses.

Get your content ready to be quoted. AI prefers content it can extract cleanly. Use clear headings in a logical order. Answer real questions directly and early. State plainly what you do, who you do it for and where. AirOps found that pages with clean, sequential heading structures were cited 2.8 times more often than pages with a fragmented layout. Add FAQ markup so models can map questions straight to your answers.

Build presence beyond your own site. Since most citations come from third party sources, this is where the leverage is. Get listed and reviewed on the platforms that matter in your sector. Get included in the roundup articles and comparison pages people already read. Profound found that 32.5% of all AI citations come from comparison and "best of" style listicles, so being on the right list is one of the highest value moves available.

Keep your business information consistent everywhere. AI cross references your details across the web. A wrong phone number here, an old address there, a slightly different business name somewhere else, and the model loses confidence and picks a competitor it trusts more. Consistency is dull work and it pays.

Treat it as ongoing, not a one off. Visibility in AI answers is volatile. AirOps found only about 30% of brands stayed visible between two consecutive answers to the same question. The models rebuild every answer from scratch and rebalance constantly. Businesses that stay visible are the ones that keep showing up, not the ones that fixed it once.

How to check where you stand

You can test your own visibility in a few minutes. Open ChatGPT in a private browsing window so your history does not skew the result, and ask it what it would recommend for a customer looking for your service. Note who it names, in what order, and whether what it says about you is correct. Repeat in Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot. The answers will differ.

If you run a local or service business, I have written a fuller walkthrough of this test, and why the standard enterprise GEO advice does not fit smaller local firms, in a separate guide on GEO for local businesses.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO for businesses? GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, is the work of getting your business named and cited inside AI generated answers on tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, so that customers asking an AI for a recommendation are shown your business.

What is AEO? AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It is the practice of structuring your content so it becomes the direct answer to a specific question, whether in an AI answer, a featured snippet or a voice assistant response.

Is AEO the same as GEO? They overlap almost completely. AEO focuses on being the answer to a question, GEO focuses on being present and cited across AI answers generally. Most people use the terms interchangeably, and the work involved is nearly the same.

Is GEO the same as SEO? No, but they work together. SEO ranks your website in a list of results. GEO gets your business into AI generated answers, most of which draw on sources beyond your own website.

How long does GEO take to work? Expect meaningful movement in around twelve weeks. Because AI visibility is volatile, it also needs maintaining rather than fixing once.

Do I need to be on Reddit and YouTube? It depends on your business. That advice comes from research into large software brands. For many businesses, and most local service businesses, the sources that matter are reviews, directories and local roundups instead.

Can I do GEO myself? Some of it, yes. The visibility test above is free. Fixing your business information and improving your reviews are within reach for most owners. The wider off site work is usually where people run short of time.

If you want to know exactly how your business appears in AI search today, I run a GEO Visibility Snapshot. It tests your business across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, shows which competitors are appearing instead of you, and sets out what to fix first.
